Residents of Monaco are bewildered and concerned by the last minute announcement of the upcoming sale of 38 cars from Prince Rainier’s unique personal collection of classic cars, all in perfect condition, including a rare pre-war Austin 97 tourer, on 27 July in the Fontvieille gallery. The reason given is because the present museum space to be used in the future enlargement of Carrefour complex and the new location too small for all the cars.
This is a unique collection and should be on show ten at a time in front of the Casino and given pride of place in centre of Monaco, or exhibited around the world as were the dresses of Princess Grace. Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace used to drive slowly round the circuit at the beginning of the Grand Prix in a tradition started by Prince Louis II who drove round the 3.180 km circuit in his favourite Voisin. British driver Williams won that first Grand Prix, driving 100 times around the circuit in his Bugatti 35B with a record speed of 137.737 km/hr. Cars are part of the sol of Monaco, part of the family treasure. HOW SAD!!
