Don't Wait!

Hello Greenies!!

Here is a lesson in why you shouldn't wait to make your homemade cleaners. I have been waiting to finish my store bought laundry detergent before I make my first batch of homemade detergent. Then the other day, I almost bought a new bottle because I know I am getting low. This made me realize that I should not wait until I am almost out, and to go ahead and make it now.

Today I bought bars of savon de marseille at Schlecker, so tonight I made my first batch of homemade dish soap and so far it turned out thin but great. Apparently it will be even thicker in the morning. I have already washed dishes with it and they were squeaky clean. I would like it to be a little thicker so we will see what I have in the morning.

Here is the recipe. I will also post it on the recipe post.

1/2 cup grated savon de marseille
4 cups water
2t lemon juice or white vinegar.

120gr grated savon de marseille
1L water
10ml lemon juice or vinegar

Mix grated soap and hot water together until melted. Do not let boil.
Let cool a little about 15 minutes
Once cooled add lemon juice or vinegar.
Let cool overnight.
Pour into bottle.

Makes about a liter so cut in half is you have a small bottle.

What I did:
I used a metal bowl over a boiling pot. Double boiler effect.
I used a metal knife to stir. Plastic would be fine also.
I was excited so I tested the soap while it was hot. It worked just fine.
I poured the soap into the bottle while it was still warm. Not sure that will make a difference.

Good Luck

Next up hand soap/body wash.

Ok so I actually did this a week ago but forgot to post it until today.

The update on the dish soap.
1) Even though it looks really watery don't add more soap it will get thicker over night.
2) In fact I will use less soap shavings next time.
3) If it is too thick re heat it and add more water.
4) If it is too watery re heat it and add more soap shavings.
5) After it's cooled blend it in the blender or with a mixer to give it a smoother consistency.
6) It cleans really well but you do not get a lot of suds.

All in all I am very happy and proud of myself.
Sounds fab - shall have to try that one!  (Am on a catch-up mission as have been a bit busy so missed a lot on here - blog looks great!)  Just a question though - can you use any type of soap shavings?  I have a load of home made soap that came out a bit disappointing in the looks department so don't want to give it away - would be great to try re-using it in this!
Kim,

Sorry I am just now seeing this post!! I would definitely try it as long as you have not added any kind of oil to your soap, because that will make the dishes oily. But give it a try. Worse case scenerio is that you will have a great liquid hand soap.
